Nov. 5th, 2007 07:04 pmIt's not the fact of travel to another world that shocks Jamie into silence, when then go through the Bounds. He's old hat at this; he knows the ropes.
Rather, it's the fact that Helen's still with him..
Here's the thing: in all his time as a Homeward Bounder, a hundred years and counting, Jamie's never managed to come through the Bounds with someone else. Oh, he's gone into the Bounds in company with other Homeward Bounders a few times, but they always ended up twitched off to different locations. They don't want you to stay together. It is, as the Dutchman would say, not permitted.
Yet here Helen is.
. . . and that's about all he can make out, right now; they've gone somewhere with much mistier sunlight, and his eyes are still readjusting back from the harsh glare of the desert.
